I believe it is more of the former as it is more of a curse so thus not so easily purged. Perhaps there is a way, but given the differences of magic and the sources, it may be difficult with what we have here. The nightmare energy affects them more easily than under normal circumstances, making them more susceptible to the curse.

So most everything you said has proven correct thus far.
