That is a worthwhile question, one I have often wondered myself. There must be external forces at play here, yet they rarely, if ever, make themselves known. The only one we know of is called the Story Eater - a malicious entity that uses nightmare to warp tales. It reportedly hails from yet another realm from which yet more of us come, which makes it a rather well-known threat. We have a few entries on it in the archives. I cannot speak on behalf of the library.
