Subject: dreamotion effects
I have a question about dreamotion magic...
Has anyone else noticed dreamotion effects being similar to some of the magic you've used back in your own world? I use a lot of light magic, and I've found that dreamotion usually manifests as light. I'm not sure if there's a correlation, or if maybe it's just a coincidence.
Also, is there a way to suppress these effects, or change them into something else? I'm worried that they may become dangerous, but I haven't had much luck trying to figure it out on my own.
Thanks.

I think the only way to say for sure is through trial and error.

You have something like dreamotion in your world? Does it work the same way?
Endwalker spoiler mentions
Not exactly. It doesn't allow us to harness the power nor does it affect our environment quite the same way. The thing it has in common is that it's also tied to strong emotions. It can affect the surroundings and people to some degree, but was much more dangerous as it is here.
They call it Dynamis. It acts a lot like aether -- a power source back home -- but focuses on negative emotions more.

[ His grammar may be simplistic and unrefined, but he is just. so proud of himself?? For a) being able to understand most of Yuma's post, and b) being able to respond to it. ]
no subject
Dynamis... It sounds dangerous, especially if it focuses so much on negative emotions. Can you use it?
no subject
I see. So you've only really used magic here, then? How long have you been practicing?
no subject
Summer party. Before dragons. Nier and I play bubble darts. I use dreamotion first time.
no subject
[ Even if Yuma's been here for a few months, it took him some time before he even attempted to use dreamotion. He's still worried about the dangers, after all. But so far, it seems like a lot of people have a pretty good handle on it. Maybe it's not as bad as he thinks...? ]

Give you what? Not know word. What pointers?

[There would be so many people that would argue with him on this point, if they were here.]
I would also like to go on record that dreamotion energy technically isn't magic either, it's a construct of the mind.
no subject
Oh, sorry. Let's see...
Pointers are like giving people helpful tips or advice to help them learn. Does that make sense?
[ ...he really hopes he explained that well. It's so much easier for the words to come to him in person rather than writing. ]
no subject
[ Ideally, he'd like to learn to control this stuff, but if push comes to shove then maybe putting on another limiter wouldn't be a bad idea, just to be safe... ]
no subject
I guess you're not wrong, there. Dreamotion does come from our dreams and stuff right?
Do you not have magic in your world? That sounds so strange...
no subject
This from a guy whose had his soul stolen not once... but twice, and he still claims there's no magic]Presumably, yes.
No. Just because something isn't easily explained by science, doesn't make it magic. There's a logical reason for everything.
no subject
I suppose controlling one's emotions could help in suppressing them, but... I'm sorry, I'm afraid I don't know anything else on the subject.
no subject
Well, magic and science are two different things, aren't they? And lots of magic has a logical explanation. For instance, some of my magic comes from a friend of mine.
[ He's not sure how open he should be about the Shining Dragon here... He's quite enjoying the relative normalcy without that hanging over his head. ]
no subject
It's okay. You have a good point, too... I guess it makes more sense that suppressing emotions would probably make things worse. Some things worked that way back in my world, too.
no subject
[
Not what you were going for there, eh Yuma?]I know I'm going to regret asking this.. and I'm willing to accept that the laws of physics may function differently in other dimensions, but what makes you think these abilities you draw on....
.. are magic? How are you defining it? What exactly can you do with this "light" magic?
no subject
[ This is going to be a very confusing conversation. ]
I guess...most of my magic appears as light because that's what my friend "represents". I just channel that same energy he gives me into a spell. Usually it's just bolts of lightning, or healing, or making my friends a little stronger for a while. And I can summon my sword with it. That's the smaller things, anyway. I don't really use magic as much as the other Dragoneers do when it comes to spells and stuff.
no subject
[It sure is]
Considering that you have to rely on a 'friend' for this 'magic', doesn't make it sound any more useful or appealing. Someone has been playing far too many RPGs.
[Did you just send a word with dragon in it?]
Dragoneers- is that just a guild name? Or is there more reason behind it other than the word dragon sounds appealing?
no subject
Well, I didn't exactly ask for it. Not that I'm ungrateful or anything. And the way he is right now, I don't think he can really use it himself.
[ That, or he's never tried. The Shining Dragon seems content to leave Yuma at the wheel and just give him advice or lecture him for being a coward. ]
Sort of. Dragoneers are people who are able to wield the Armonics, and they can harness their power to resonate with the Shining Dragon. They're all really good friends of mine.
[ ...well, most of them. So far. His relations with them are a bit strange, but largely positive. He may be stuck with them, but at least they're good people. ]
no subject
I don't envy you.
[It was bad enough that he tended to get drawn in to other people's drama, but Kaiba never wanted to be in a position where he would be so dependent.]
Armonics? You're losing me.
[At first glance it just looked like a misspelling but this guy had taken the care to capitalize it in the middle of a sentence. There was a delay before the message was sent as the blue-eyed tech
nerdgenius just stared at the words "Shining Dragon". He'd heard that before, and not just in regards to his favorite cardgame.]Wouldn't... happen to be a dragon with a mix of golden and brown scales, bright blue eyes, and tri-horns on it's head, would it?
no subject
Kaiba's words are more reassuring than he realizes. Sometimes being the Shining Dragon's vessel can be quite the burden, whether he's being put on pedestals or imprisoned for experimentation. As friendly as the Dragoneers are, sometimes it's hard to not feel like a figure instead of a person. ]
Yeah. There's seven of them in total. They're basically like special weapons, but they can be used to play music as well. That's how they resonate with the Shining Dragon.
[ Yuma blinks. That's... A fairly accurate description, actually. Only then does he recall the memory of when he first met Kaiba; where he'd been acting very, very differently. ]
Yes, that's right. That's what his restrained form looks like, at least. Why?
no subject
Forgive me if I assume too much about your circumstances, but speaking from personal experience... trying to suppress yourself in any way often leads to the opposite result than intended. Perhaps training to learn to use those powers better could help you? Although I'm not an expert myself, so I can't guarantee it would work...
no subject
[ He is so ready to be of use. This is the one thing he's really, really good at. And if he does a good job, maybe he'll even get praise for it...! ]
no subject
That certainly would come as some surprise to Kaiba, who never went out of his way to be reassuring to anyone except for his brother and any potential stockholders.]
This isn't making your story seem any less like an RPG.
[It was like someone created a game concept by placing everything they liked into a blender and rolling with it. As a game designer himself... it was relatable.]
How bad of a musician are you, if your instrument is literally classified as a weapon...?
[Why hadn't Kaiba noticed before. Hadn't the "shining dragon" from before introduced himself as "Yuma Ilvern"? It hadn't been his finest moment, and he should have been distancing himself from the incident completely but... something just wasn't adding up here. Dragons he could deal with. Fine.... but a person that turns into a dragon or vice versa...? Or whatever was going on here... ]
... No reason, lucky guess.
[COUGH. Sure it was. Ugh, he could already feel the beginnings of a headache developing]
no subject
Yeah... you have a point. I have some powers that I was working hard on controlling in my world, too. My friend suggested I just practice more with them, so I guess that would work with this too, but I don't even know where to start with dreamotion. Every time I think I've made sense of it, it finds a way to surprise me again.
no subject
That would be great! I've been having a pretty rough time figuring it out, so I'd really appreciate it!
no subject
They're all very good musicians, actually. Kirika is even a good singer, too. They don't really put on performances or anything, though. Most of the time they're helping out around the city or doing missions for the King.
[ And also protecting and/or rescuing Yuma, apparently. ]
Oh, okay. If you say so.
[ What an odd question. ]
no subject
Okay I help. When help? I have time every day night!
no subject
Fetch quests, etc. I'm familiar with the concept.
[No game would be complete without them. Surprisingly, Yuma was only too willing to let the matter drop from the sound of the response that was received.]
..... Is the Shining Dragon, here?
no subject
An option is to perhaps study how others use their magic and dreamotion and try different ways. One or may may end up sticking.
I could not personally, no. Due to circumstances back home, those who gave into despair were irrevocably changed to beasts with no sense of self left. Not even aether remained. Though, I do think this was a much more specified issue. Not something you'll find here.
[Or at least he hopes so...]

[ There's a long pause before Yuma continues writing. When he does, it's a bit slower than before. Not just because he debated whether or not he should tell Kaiba about this - at this point he wasn't sure Kaiba would even believe him - but also because it's a bit of a heavy subject for him. ]
I don't know. He hasn't responded to me ever since I got here.

[ But that's not what she's most interested in. What drew Zelda's attention in the first place are Yuma's questions about suppressing dreamotion. Having used her sealing magic to help Phantom with a similar problem, she's wondering if Yuma might also have some kind of dark, dangerous secret he's trying to hold back. ]
There are ways to suppress dream- or nightmare-energy to an extent, but they are neither easy nor foolproof.
