Subject: A Method to Stay in This World

As everyone should know, the version of ourselves in this world is wholly separate from our originals that remain awake in our home worlds. What we do here has no effect there, and vice versa. Most won't care whether they are here for a temporary stay, however there are those like me and Tifa who have formed relationships that would be impossible if not for this world.

And I am determined to make it last.

When the Halloween Carnival arrived last October, we had the opportunity to speak to the tapirs and inquire about the nature of our existence here. In short, we are tethered to our home world which allows us to return, currently at random. However, the fae, creatures, and every other being that is not a dreamer like ourselves do not have such tethers. They either traversed into this world or were directly taken through other means.

This leads to the conclusion that if we want to stay in this world, we need to somehow break the connection, either by completely severing it or changing the tether to connect to this world instead. Perhaps we need to completely change the nature of our current "dream self." As the risk of being sent back is high if the tether is cut, I aim to focus on other means.

However, there is of course no known knowledge or means to do this, and the tapirs do not know, either. Thus I am sending this inquiry to:

1) ask if there are any others who would be interested either to help or in the results;

2) if there is anyone who is familiar with dimensional travel or strong magic that could give some clue as to what to look for.

Currently I am looking through the Tree of Stories to find any text or story that could be of use. My current suspicion is dreamotion will be the main component, however manipulating it for such a use will be difficult.

[So this Kaiba fellow also has experience in being in another world, just a different one. No wonder he was skeptical—but then again, anyone should be. And he also poses something he hadn't quite consider—if it would affect those in this world. So far most concerns had been more local, and it gives him pause.]

You bring up a fair point and it should be something to be considered in researching and before testing anything that we may find. I also find some credence in your theory about memories being suppressed. Even in my world I was having strange dreams that I later realized were related to this one.

In any case, whether you had a direct stake in this or just find the problem interesting enough to solve, I won't stop anyone who wishes to look into it. If you have any thoughts or idea, I would be open to hearing them.

[Just from their few replies, Kaiba was finding himself feeling a little impressed, not that he had any intention of making this fact public knowledge.]

I'm not usually in the habit of the whole.. cooperative effort thing, but in this instance I'll make an exception. Even if our reasons for seeking knowledge are different it would be beneficial to both sides.

I'll give it some thought- see if there's anything from my prior research into interdimensional theory that might play into the mechanics here and let you know what I come up with..

My memories from Geardagas didn't stick when I went back home, either... I only got them back after being here a while.

It makes me wonder if forgetting might just be part of the mismatch in time and space, or something. Like it's a forced reset.

[ That makes Zelda wonder what sort of person Eustace was in his home world—how he lived, who he surrounded himself with. In Songerein, he seems to be a natural leader, whether he intends to be or not (even though he's sort of brusque). This isn't the first time he's used the journals to call upon dreamwalkers in the community to assist in some way or another—Zelda remembers answering one such call. She heard the heartfelt toasts and speeches at his wedding. If the situation were reversed and Eustace were to willfully leave Songerein without a word, Zelda couldn't imagine his friends taking that well.

But perhaps that's what this is all about—that the life and relationships he has here are that much deeper and more important than those he ever had back home. ]

A message would be the least you could do. I believe that finding a way to communicate--at least, to say goodbye--to the people you're leaving behind in your homeland is important. In fact, I think anyone else who is entertaining the idea of trying to stay in Songerein forever would want such a thing.

Well I don't mean to brag but I am a police lieutenant. But I have a few tricks up my sleeve, if that's what you're asking. I wouldn't be dragging the team down.

I know someone had asked the tapirs whether it was possible to reverse the way the baubles worked—sending something from this world to there. They had no real answer, but that could be something to look into.

And in physical combat? Since you mention magic, I assume you've had some kind of monsters or magical creatures in your world as well.

It could be. I will say this—when I had briefly returned to my world, I do remember having vague, strange dreams that made no sense to me there. Nothing concrete, like a common abstract dream. But when I returned here, I realized they were related to this world.

So it might not be completely impossible to remember, even if it might not make sense to ourselves in our world.

Though I now have to ask—why were you researching into interdimensional theory to begin with?

It seems the risks are high, regardless of each situation. In this case, we should really investigate the matter thoroughly as you said. I haven't met with them in person, but do you know if the tapirs have more information they are withholding? Is there a possibility to negotiate with them if there is more information be shared?

It wasn't a question Kaiba particularly wanted to answer since he felt it would reveal some weakness in himself, but somehow it seemed pertinent to compose a satisfactory response.]

I mentioned that this wasn't the first dimension I'd wound up in earlier, remember? I, or this version of myself, haven't been back to my own universe for what must be years now.

Maybe from your perspective that's more of a reason for why I should want to stay here.. but there's someone whose counting on me there.

Let's face it, he was tired of these alternate timelines and dimensions having this much control over his own life, so he wanted to seize that power for himself. That way, he could reunite with his brother, without losing his girlfriend, or rival in the process. Why be beholden to anyone else's whims again?]

I guess that makes as much sense as it can. Dreams already feel like time doesn't work the same, even without whatever we've got going on here, so maybe there's less of an obstacle. I feel like I have less experience with restoring memories than the other aspect, though.

I don't know much about dimensional travel, but the way were connected to our home worlds in Geardagas was mirrors, individual to each of us. We couldn't use them at will until the magic-eating disease there was wiped out.

To test whether or not it's possible to change the nature of objects, yes. But they may not have a tether the way a living being would. That part at least may require experimentation on living subjects.

Not much I'm afraid. I've been entered into pacts that tether my soul to others, but I never personally did anything to make it happen. I just kind of stood there while other people did all the work.

Truthfully...after witnessing the tapirs in person, I have little doubt they are withholding much of anything. If anything they seemed rather supportive of our endeavors. They were also cautious as they recognized we were trying for something unknown, but they did not seem as concerned as we are.

Regardless, another attempt in communicating with them would be beneficial, especially now that we have a few more ideas we could pose for them.

I can see how that can also be frustrating. Regaining control would make sense in your situation.

Given that we can use the baubles to receive items from different worlds and view our homelands at the observatory, it stands to reason that they be capable of sending letters as well.

If not, perhaps it might be possible to send messages to people in our homelands through their dreams. Or perhaps dreamotion can connect us to those dreaming outside the dream world.
