Good evening. I write to ask if there are any amongst us dreamwalkers who may be able and willing to teach the healing arts.

The ability to mend wounds and cleanse poisons is a valuable skill that can help us prepare for unexpected events. Owing to the varied forms of dreamwalkers, I believe that magic would be more effective, as well as more accessible, whether drawing from magical aptitude or from our own dreamotion energies.

Please let me know if you are interested in teaching. I can offer some compensation for your time. I also encourage fellow prospective students to write in, I shall keep you apprised of any developments.

[ Once Shirou arrives, Miss Christine shows him up to the attic where Phantom lives. He seems surprised by the gift - he had prepared tea and cookies for Shirou's visit, but did not expect one in return. He takes the basket with quiet thanks and places it on the dining table. ]

[ He pours a cup of tea for them each. They can talk as long as Shirou wants to. ]

Hey, thanks. I appreciate it. Tea's always better when you drink it warm.

[ He offers thanks before having some tea. ]

So we should talk about magic.

[ Phantom takes a sip of his own tea in response. ]

What would you like to ask in particular?

Can shadows do things like curse people?

[ He doesn't know if the two are related or hold any relevance. ]

[ Phantom gives a moment of thought before he replies. ]

It would depend on the origin of the shadow, and the source of its power. If it is draw from a curse, or some sort of malicious entity, then it would be possible. I would need more details to answer your question.

That's true enough. I don't know too much about this shadow. I hear it's feeding off energy from people and leaving behind destruction wherever it goes.

I haven't figured out the source of the shadow yet. Just getting near it made me feel sick. Touching it kind of felt like getting hit with a curse. So I don't know what to do about that thing if I can't even get near it.

[It's troubling him enough to tell Phantom about it. ]

[ Phantom's brows furrow. While he's seen many types of Originium Arts, it's hard to apply such knowledge to magic that came from other worlds. ]

Perhaps there would be some sort of positive energy or light-related magic that could counter its effects? Protecting yourself with holy magic seems more plausible.

I'll have to look into it and maybe there is holy or light magic that can counter it. That would be the teachings of the church and God but I don't practice prayer.

[ He has no reason to go to God's house! If he's there it's usually for some other purpose. ]

Do you know about gospels and magic? In my world the church and mages don't really get along.

[ The church being associated with light is not something that Phantom knows. In his world, religion is restricted to the Sankta and the Liberi who took their laws to Iberia. ]

I know little about it, my apologies. But I do believe that light does not necessarily need to come from divinity. There ought to be other sources.

What is the magic of your world like? It would aid my understanding if you could give me more details.

Magic in my world is complicated. I'm just a beginner and I wasn't even taught how to do things the correct way so all I know is one or two spells.

[That sounds so lame when he says it out loud like that.]

When I was looking around here earlier there's people who know a lot more than just one spell.

[ That explains the vagueness of Shirou's answers. He supposes it can't be helped if Shirou himself doesn't know much of the details. ]

Spells require an overarching structure, or set of rules, to manifest their effects. Do you know of anything similar in your world?

Well I think it depends on the caster. They cast spells by drawing in energy from the world and manifesting it into magecraft.

[ It's a tedious process. That process can be dangerous too depending on the type of magic you want to use. ]

Magecraft is the type of spells magi like to use. I usually start by making a magic circut and focusing on that.

[ Hm, so it's not so different from Arts drawing upon the power within Originium. Phantom nods. ]

Then, what are these circuits? [ They sound like technological implements. ] Would you be able to use it to channel positive energy, perhaps?

Magic circuits are something a magi is born with. I'm not a proper mage so I have to make them myself.

[ He's so bad at magic it's kind of miserable really. ]

A family with a stronger bloodline for magic would have more magic circuits. It's not something you can just ask for.

[ Inborn affinity, then. Strange that they would be called circuits. Phantom closes his eyes in thought. ]

Would weaker circuits affect a person's ability to use magical tools?

I think so. There's a lot of things that get passed down through bloodlines. Teachings, spells, family heirlooms. A proper mage might even have their own workshop.

[He'd like to know more about these things that Phantom is describing. ]


What kind of purpose does a magical tool have? It seems to have more use than just magic if you're asking me.

These tools would enable the individual to accomplish feats that they would otherwise not be able to.

[ He meant it more as a general term, but that's his understanding of it. ]

Certain tools require some level of aptitude from the wielder.

The magi call those things mystic codes. I have one with me right now.

[Shirou holds up his left arm and it's covered in some kind of red cloth that looks more like a seal.]

Do you see this seal? It's the shroud of martin. I don't really know if it's similar to those magical tools you described.

[ Phantom looks at the cloth on Shirou's arm. It seems rather ordinary, though he supposes he can't judge other worlds' tools by their appearances. ]

What is its function? [ Is it like his Infection Monitor? ]

It's supposed to seal away my magical potential. I know that sounds counter productive when you're a mage but if I don't seal it away it'll destroy my body. So that's why I can't properly cast spells.

[...There's a good reason behind it at least. It's not his fault that he's being hindered like this. ]

Have you ever seen anything like it before?

[ Phantom frowns and folds his arms. This is not unfamiliar to him. ]

Why would it destroy your body?

[projections]

It's magic that's too strong for a human to withstand. I guess this thing is more like a weapon.

Do you have any magical weapons? [Phantom seems to know a lot about these things so it wouldn't be weird if he had magical tools of his own.]

You said you did not have good magic circuits. How would you have magic that is too strong for you to handle, then?
