sixth entry ⊗ permanent residency

Subject: A Method to Stay in This World

As everyone should know, the version of ourselves in this world is wholly separate from our originals that remain awake in our home worlds. What we do here has no effect there, and vice versa. Most won't care whether they are here for a temporary stay, however there are those like me and Tifa who have formed relationships that would be impossible if not for this world.

And I am determined to make it last.

When the Halloween Carnival arrived last October, we had the opportunity to speak to the tapirs and inquire about the nature of our existence here. In short, we are tethered to our home world which allows us to return, currently at random. However, the fae, creatures, and every other being that is not a dreamer like ourselves do not have such tethers. They either traversed into this world or were directly taken through other means.

This leads to the conclusion that if we want to stay in this world, we need to somehow break the connection, either by completely severing it or changing the tether to connect to this world instead. Perhaps we need to completely change the nature of our current "dream self." As the risk of being sent back is high if the tether is cut, I aim to focus on other means.

However, there is of course no known knowledge or means to do this, and the tapirs do not know, either. Thus I am sending this inquiry to:

1) ask if there are any others who would be interested either to help or in the results;

2) if there is anyone who is familiar with dimensional travel or strong magic that could give some clue as to what to look for.

Currently I am looking through the Tree of Stories to find any text or story that could be of use. My current suspicion is dreamotion will be the main component, however manipulating it for such a use will be difficult.

If you are interested, you can respond here or contact me privately.

[ooc: AND THUS MARKS THE BEGINNINGS OF A VERY LONG QUEST but yeah Eustace is trying to find a way to stay permanently in this world and is looking for anyone who wants to help, wants to benefit, or has ideas that they can look into and be possibly incorporated in the actual method. An additional sign-up post has gone up for an official head count. Those who sign-up will be able to play a significant role in finding a clue and/or piece that will lead to the final result. More details there!]

[ Wow, he just came out and said it: he and Tifa want to stay in Songerein forever. Such a thought has intruded on Zelda's mind multiple times, but she always guiltily shoos it away. She shouldn't want to stay here forever--she has a duty to her kingdom and all its people. Eventually, Zelda knows she will have to go home, rejoin her real self and face that destiny.

Even though she doesn't want to at all. ]

Are you so certain that staying here won't negatively effect your real self in your homeworld?

[ Zelda didn't wanna say something about this at the wedding, but she's been thinking it ever since Eustace and Tifa announced their engagement. Is it really wise to get married when your time together could end at any moment without warning? ]

[ This is probably the most Zelda has ever seen Eustace say at one time.

His words give Zelda a lot to think on, but one thing in particular stands out from the rest. "As selfish as it might sound" sticks in her mind. How can he be so open about the selfishness of such an idea, and yet still want to pursue it? Why is he willing to risk removing himself from his original world? ]

What about your friends and family in your homeland?

Even if they can take care of themselves, surely they will miss you for more than just your martial prowess. Shouldn't you at least talk this over with them? This is such a big decision to make all on your own.

[ She's starting to feel agitated on his behalf. If one of her friends chose to leave Hyrule forever, never to return... And she's already lost so many... ]

[ That makes Zelda wonder what sort of person Eustace was in his home world—how he lived, who he surrounded himself with. In Songerein, he seems to be a natural leader, whether he intends to be or not (even though he's sort of brusque). This isn't the first time he's used the journals to call upon dreamwalkers in the community to assist in some way or another—Zelda remembers answering one such call. She heard the heartfelt toasts and speeches at his wedding. If the situation were reversed and Eustace were to willfully leave Songerein without a word, Zelda couldn't imagine his friends taking that well.

But perhaps that's what this is all about—that the life and relationships he has here are that much deeper and more important than those he ever had back home. ]

A message would be the least you could do. I believe that finding a way to communicate--at least, to say goodbye--to the people you're leaving behind in your homeland is important. In fact, I think anyone else who is entertaining the idea of trying to stay in Songerein forever would want such a thing.

Given that we can use the baubles to receive items from different worlds and view our homelands at the observatory, it stands to reason that they be capable of sending letters as well.

[ Hmm. ]

If not, perhaps it might be possible to send messages to people in our homelands through their dreams. Or perhaps dreamotion can connect us to those dreaming outside the dream world.

[ Tbqh sometimes it feels like there's not much known about anything here. ]

Indeed. It can grant wishes, but not all wishes. Some of I've received from it are perfectly normal, but some of them are [ a pause. ] strange. I am not sure how to describe it. But I can tell they are different.

[ Terrible, the absolute worst. Turn on your location; we just want to talk. ]

Let me see if I can explain. Please bear with me.

In Hyrule, I had a device called a Sheikah Slate. It is a piece of technology in the shape of a handheld slate (hence its name) which is capable of performing many different functions, such as capturing photographs, writing notes, and things of that nature. It has an interface which allows you to navigate the different functions, a bit like a book's table of contents. Other dreamwalkers here have similar items, although called things like phones, tablets, or computers.

[ Anyway. ]

I did not have it in my possession when I awoke here, so when we received our first baubles after that first Halloween, I used mine to wish for my Sheikah Slate. I received it, but I started noticing that it was a little different from how I remembered it. The interface is completely different, for starters. I thought at first that perhaps my memory was foggy; I was asleep for several decades before waking here, mind. But when Link arrived, he also had a Sheikah Slate. So I compared the two and they are different; I wasn't misremembering.

The thing is, I don't understand why. I have wished for mundane items like herbs and spices and books, but they all appear exactly as I expect them to. Why is my new Sheikah Slate different from the original?

[personal profile] multidisciplinary 2023-02-10 10:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Both, actually, but only within the Slate's programming. Physically, my Slate looks exactly like it should; I even compared it with Link's just to be sure. But within its programs, the two are completely different.

[ Zelda pauses as she tries to think of how best to explain the differences between the two Slates. ]

It is a bit like having two different editions of the same book. Overall, they are the same thing, but they are presented in different ways. Perhaps the first edition was bound in red and the second in blue. Perhaps the script faces are different, and the sizes of the text. Or perhaps the illustrations are in a different place in the new edition, or omitted entirely. Maybe there is now a foreword in the new edition.

The Slates are mostly the same, but they do have noticeable differences. The functions seem to be the same, but sometimes they act differently. Sometimes the functions in my Slate seem to become
[ a pause ] corrupted. They don't work the way they are supposed to.

Yes, I've already considered whether the discrepancies in the two Slates could be related to the differences in timepoints between myself and Link, but I do not believe it to be so.

I have not heard about anyone else experiencing a phenomenon like this with the Well. I also use the Well quite a bit myself, but I have not had this experience any other time.

'Corrupted' may not have been the best choice of words; 'changed' might be more accurate. They work, but they work differently. Both the process of using the Runes and the end result are different from how they worked in Hyrule.

It does not require any sort of energy—not in the way that things like phones and laptops do.
[ The words 'phone' and 'laptop' look a little awkward in Zelda's handwriting, as though she's spelling foreign words. ] The Sheikah Slate seems to contain some sort of infinite energy generator. The device is over 10,000 years old, but it does not need to draw any kind of energy in order to function. I do not know how it is capable of such a feat; this kind of technological knowledge has long since been lost to my people. But the Slate was able to function even before the elecrystal expedition.

[ If only Eustace could hear the scoff that escaped Zelda's lips when she read his words. As if technology could be affected by something as silly and fickle as dreamotion. ]

That seems highly unlikely. I've not heard such a thing happening to any of the other technological devices owned by other dreamwalkers. Besides, I've not experienced any dreamotion-typical shortcomings while using the Sheikah Slate. It functions consistently, without fluctuation, and does not require the usual amount of focus and emotion of dreamotion magic to operate.

[ A good scientist wouldn't write off Eustace's suggestion without even investigating it, but Zelda isn't always a good scientist. Whoops. ]
