journal entry; first day of owlets

❰ not one to be on the up and up in a place where he feels that fully integrating is still a form of treason, the whole deal with owls and santa claus has totally gone over emil's head. he stays in his tree house, goes out to enjoy himself from time to time, comes back and that's that.

unluckily enough for him, he's chosen a day of owlet extravaganza to go outside and get fresh air. reclining against the base of a tree not too far from the one he calls home, everything is uneventful. no huge bugs, the weather is mild as far as he's concerned. there's no noise— well, actually, hold that thought. there is a high-pitched sound off in the distance, but no matter. the closer it gets, the more his aggravation shifts from being underlying to obvious, especially if the crease in his brow is any indication. but the time it finally gets close enough to be within sight line, the smell of burnt ground becomes more apparent.

the sight he sees: a small owlet, screeching and running, flapping like mad while every beat of its wings pushes a cloud of fire forward. the bird veers close enough to emil that he has to tuck in his legs to avoid his shoes being burnt.

what...was that? did he miss a memo?? is this just another thing that happens here??? ❱

A bird just tried to set me on fire ?

Okay, that's an alright idea.

But what do owls eats?

Meat of any kind should do the trick. Failing that, children of all species tend to like sweets.

Unless you would prefer to try to catch bugs, that is.

[He's pretty sure they eat bugs too? He thinks? He is no owl expert here.]

The bug would hurt me before the owl would, considering they're the size of tanks.

❰ only a slight embellishment, there. if he caught one, he'd have to dismember and fillet the thing to even begin to feed it to an owl baby. nah. ❱

I have half a cookie, we'll see if that works.

It took the cookie but it only bought me about thirty seconds of peace AND I'm drenched.

[And he'd thought it was bad enough just having five of them dangling from his scarf without any sort of magic involved...]

They're capable of using all types of elemental magic?

❰ the scene went as follows: emil found it within close enough proximity to extend the offering of food, as it was screaming from a lower tree branch. it descended upon him, snatching the cookie in his talons, though a flap of its wings sent two sheets of water raining down upon its giver of such charity.

fml. ❱

APPARENTLY because this place isn't inclined to be so kind as to not give crazy animals FREE REIGN of whatever magic they seem to choose.

❰ just how soaked he is might be apparent from how the edges of his written letters slightly smear in places. ❱

... I'm starting to understand why the mother doesn't seem too bothered about them wandering off.

[It had seemed a little odd after how distressed she'd been about losing them in the first place! But if the babies are capable of all that... yeah, he wouldn't exactly want them around 24/7 either.

I might understand, but she gave birth to this menace so it's her responsibility to come chastise them.

In general I've just had it up to here with there being no such thing as a normal creature here. I want another cat since I'm stuck here, but I'm afraid I'll get one and it has poisonous fur or something.

[Oh, believe him, he feels you on that one, Emil. He never signed up to be a babysitter for one owlet, much less five.]

Theoretically, it might be possible to create one via dreamotion, but as to whether or not it would actually be "normal"... let's just say I have my own doubts as to that. This place seems to like doing what it pleases.

[And he's very angry about that! He does not like having his exoflection be at the whims of his emotions!]

Back up a moment though.

Do you mean I can create a cat? As many cats as I want?

Theoretically.

❰ let's table them not being at all normal for the moment, because this is fantastic news. admittedly, he should probably know more about dreamotion magic by now...but his magic teacher-slash-boyfriend has fucked off into the woods for some odd months. ❱

In theory. One can use it to create items out of thin air, so it stands to reason that given enough practice, living creatures might be possible as well... assuming that it follows similar rules to the artes from my world that it bears a strong resemblance to.

[Oh god he really did just mean "theoretically" why are they actually talking about this now... what has he done.]

❰ they could have a whole cat pile!!! but alas, this information doesn't sound as promising as previously expected. ❱

An animal is different from something like a cup, though. They have personalities and feelings and they're alive. I don't know if I can believe there's some form of magic out there that can do something like that, even if it's made from our dreams or however they explain it here.

It's quite possible in my world.

[Now, whether or not it's actually a good idea is very much up for debate, but.]

That's why I said that theoretically it should be possible here as well, but it would most likely require a high level of skill and a great deal of practice before you could even attempt it. It is a living creature, after all.
