[02] three lies, one truth
Sender: Susato Mikotoba
To: Everyone
Subject: Passive dream recording
Warning: Descriptions of death (specifically: falling/burning, stabbing, freezing, drowning) and the crippling fear that comes with that.
When Susato is first seen, she is nigh unrecognizable. There's only a glimpse of her. Her hair is frazzled, long well past her shoulders, and the white dress she wears, accented by pinks, does not match the grim darkness of the cage she is in. Seconds later, there's a loud metallic clang as the cage is shut.
There's movement like a shaky camera, and you... no, Susato is looking into the eyes of one man who looks almost surprised to see her. As if he hadn't been the one to put her there.
"Mr Vigil?"
The voice is small and cracks like glass over the flames below.
Before he can respond, there's the sound of a lever and a deafening scream as a feeling of terrifying weightlessness takes over your body.
You're falling, and you don't know when you'll stop.
* * * * *
Out of the frying pan and into the fire.
When the dream spits you out, you can taste a mixture of blood and dirt as you blink your eyes open. They sting like you've been crying, and when you bring your filthy hands up to look at them, you can see the pink of your kimono sleeves. The loops in your air feel looser and messier than usual as you can feel the terrifying glare of a man before you, bleeding and in chains, and yet no less threatening.
All around you are corpses. You just barely manage to struggle to your feet when he moves to strike you down with alarming quickness, his blade and scythe at his call. Something hard and sharp pierces your stomach as his voice booms:
"You will not tarnish... my brother's memory...!"
You were so close. You can see some of the broken chains you worked so hard at; he was almost free.
But it's too late.
A laughter seems to be coming from the noble in the portrait behind the Reaper, and an eerie red glow bleeds out from the canvas as your consciousness fades.
* * * * *
The laughter transforms into something else, another voice. It is almost pleasant; and the scene is entirely different now. A gorgeous ballroom surrounds you with an air of celebration, you are humbled, taking the man before you in a dance. Here is the face that everyone says you can trust, and yet you can hear suspicious whispers coming from the walls.
Something is wrong.
You feel cold in a way that is inexplicable. Your very core is frozen, and it feels like you will never get warm. suddenly it's a struggle just to move with the music; but eventually you stop listening to that, too.
"Don't struggle." The king pulls you close in what is most certainly a threatening manner. Beneath your gloves, your fingers have already become ice. "Your death is inevitable now. Accept it with grace, and don't scream."
But even if you wanted to, you can't.
Pathetic gurgles escape your throat as ice travels up your chest and your neck. A piece of your white hair falls across your face, but when you go to brush it away, your hands won't move. Nothing will.
There is stillness. For a moment, you have hope, because you can still move your terrified, wide eyes, but soon that too is gone.
* * * * *
In that moment, you're not able to look at anything else.
Your neck is craned upwards and suddenly, the dream has shifted one final time. You're staring at the surface of the freezing cold water from below, unable to breathe, but the Gods above have mercy on you, and it doesn't last long. A glaring white starts to creep into the corners of your vision, filling everything in haze, and the dream ends as suddenly as it began.
* * * * *
[ Back in the comparative comforts of her home, Susato awakes with a start. She gasps for breath like she's just been held underwater, sitting up and gripping at her blankets. For all she knows, they are her lifeline. She is shaking, the faded memories of dreamscapes past rushing back to her, and she feels her arm knock something off the bed she's on.
......All she can do is breathe. ]
(( ooc: tl;dr, just a fun throwback to the fun deaths i've been able to put her through this past year. <3 please assume delayed responses where appropriate/etc. ))

[Rhonnie's been gaining a bit of weight and she has no idea why!!!
She kids, though. She's allowed only one.]
Seems the timing was pretty good, made them fresh that day, so I hope you were able to enjoy them. And that you shared with Kazuma.
no subject
No wonder they were so delicious! But I did manage to save him a few.
[
Just barely, she has a sweet tooth okay.]Thank you, truly. I hope I'm able to do the same for you one day, when you need it.
no subject
[She's just glad that she could give Susato something to enjoy after that dream. Speaking of...]
How are you feeling, by the way?
[It's been a couple of days since then, and Susato seems to be back to her bright self, but she knows that these sorts of things can weigh on a person even after the fact. She wants to make sure lil sis is okay!!]
no subject
[ The memories and the dream borne from them fade with each passing day. She considers her answer, but it feels a bit impersonal, so she adds: ]
I am hoping the dream was not an omen for the year to come, but I am determined not to let it be so.
no subject
I doubt it will be. That just means you've gotta turn it on its head, yeah? Make the year better than what it already could've been. Anything you're looking forward to?
no subject
[ Susato writes idly while she thinks. It's hard to have major, concrete plans due to the nature of this place; but due to her own nature, she'll always try anyway. In the end, they are mostly small goals, like "read all the books," or "practice that dish for the Harvest like you've been meaning to."
In the end, she just continues with a simple question: ]
Well. Did you know it is the year of the rabbit this year?
no subject
Does it mean something special back home?
no subject
It is supposed to be a symbol of longevity, peace and prosperity. ♡
no subject
So, do you celebrate rabbits in the year of the rabbit, then?
no subject
What is your favorite animal, Tifa?
[ it's dogs, isn't it. ]
no subject
Her answer doesn't come right away, because she does need some time to think about it. The corgis would be so upset if mom wrote down anything else but "the corgis" (she has to be specific!) but she's grown to love all dogs, and wolves...]
Don't tell any of the others, but I think it might be cats.
[Surprise!?]
A cat was my first pet, so I guess he'll always hold a special place, you know?
no subject
Though that tracks? She thinks. At the very least, she certainly remembers that Clover very much looked comfortable in her arms that night when they celebrated Halloween. Perhaps this is part of the reason. (Also he just fit the aesthetic very well.) ]
I had no idea! On Midgar? What was his name?
no subject
Was a bit of a troublemaker. Always darting out of the house when I opened the door.
no subject
no subject
[Monsters and the like... and the reactor if he was feeling really adventurous. She'll have to tell the story of how Cloud kept trying to find him for her someday...]
Was Wagahai a bit of a troublemaker too?
no subject
Mainly I think he just did whatever he wanted... I caught him trying to climb up onto Mr Sholmes' shelves numerous times, even though there was no room for him.
But no one could stay mad at him for long.
[ She bets it is the same for Tifa...... ]
What happened to Maru?
no subject
I'm not sure, actually. To this day, I don't know if he ever made it out of Nibelheim during the fire...
[She has always assumed that he never did, but perhaps there was some small part of her that hoped that wasn't the case. That he was able to slip out and away somehow.]
no subject
[ There is... a pretty noticeable pause before Susato responds properly. That should probably be her cue to abort, and she probably will! But... ]
Perhaps he would come to you if you were to wish for him at the well. Though I admit, you two of you aren't exactly lacking in pets at the moment.
[ Buuuuuuuuuut if the pet cafe is going to be a thing... ]
no subject
[She's thought about it, but decided against it for a number of reasons... one of them being—]
Eustace and I already have our hands pretty full, though. With all the dogs, and now the cafe, there's going to be no shortage of animals around.
[That would be the less sad reason for it, but mainly, she doesn't want the sore memories that would likely come from having Maru back when she is trying to move past those days. And that's okay.]
Speaking of, we're going to be opening soon, I think.
no subject
Oh? [ Well... That means 76 will be busy, if he wasn't already as Tifa made the preparations. She deserved this, but Susato can't help but feel sad anyway. ] You'll let me know, won't you?
no subject
[Which is the most important part, she thinks. Helping animals find good homes to go to is something that she and Eustace are really set on doing here. Besides, they can't take in all the dogs and keep them.]
no subject
Sadly, it's not like the Harvest can take in all the animals either, so it's a lesson she can relate to. ]
I promise to visit and tell everyone that I can. Whenever you are both ready. [ She'll even put up signs around the Harvest. In the bar area? Perhaps she could surprise Tifa with that...?
Ah, maybe that would be too soon. ]
no subject
Thank you, Susato. I appreciate it. And for what it's worth? I've really loved working with you for the last year.
Can't believe it's been that long.
[She knows it's a bittersweet thing, but neither of them are going very far!]
Plus. I might need a hand in playing with the animals once in a while, too.
no subject
Hehe, you can count on me. Tell them I will be there.
[ Speaking of which... ]
Did they enjoy the pillows? [ Not more than mom and dad, she hopes. ]
no subject
We keep one upstairs, of course. It takes up a whole spot on the couch when we're not using it. Eustace insisted that it had a good, comfortable place to lounge.
1/2 (we can wrap this if you want <3)

yess this seems like a good place! 🎀🎀
