Optional Action/Log: The Wishing Well

[ Encounter one (1) local phantom named Somnus standing near the Wishing Well within the town, peering over its worn edge. As many might already know, one may cast a bauble into the well and receive something in return. Perhaps he's here to do just that? Or, perhaps, he's here to observe. The well is rather mysterious in nature, after all. Where else does someone drop a plain round sphere, imbued with a wish, and receive a facsimile of an item from one's homeworld in return?

Regardless of his actual intentions, his expression appears as grim as ever. Fitting, for a dead person. ]

Javelin Throwing

[ Somewhere at the border of the town and the wildlands, catch him practicing tossing javelins. It seems he may be doing it as some form of exercise. That, or a distraction. ]

I am not so certain inebriation is fool-proof way to prevent dreams.

There's always pushing yourself to exhaustion, but it's not a healthy or viable method.

[ If there is one. But if there're flowers and dreamcatchers that do various things like absorbing negative dreamotion, there's gotta be something out there that just... negates it. Hopefully. ]

No. There is neither control nor safety for unconscious sleep, and I need not have it.

Perhaps it is a matter of discovering it for ourselves.

maybe. i mean, i have a friend who's a researcher, but there's got to be some people who would've thought about it before now, right?

Hence this query. If they have, I would hope they comment, even should it be for any methods that have failed to stop a dream from occurring.

The Wishing Well

[ Seeing the journal entry from his dearly departed ancestor came as a bit of a shock to Noctis - he never took the other Lucis Caelum to be the sort of person to ask questions like this unless he had specific reason to... And Noctis had no intention of replying to said question where others could see (and possibly respond to) a reply of his own. They didn't need anybody else interfering in their business, whatever it may be. He doesn't know the reason behind the questions being asked by Somnus, but he intends to find out.

Whenever he finds him, that is.

Noctis goes about his afternoon as he's been doing since his unfortunate encounter in the castle, working on learning more about himself and how he can use dreamotion before he decides he needs a break. It's then that finds his elder staring at the Wishing Well, a look on his face the young King knows he's seen on his own and on his father's face before. ]

Don't think you'll find the answers to that question you asked staring into the Wishing Well.

[ Somnus hears him approach before speaks, and by the time Noctis makes his comment, Somnus has already straightened and turned partway to acknowledge him. ]

Hail, O Chosen. [ A pause. Then, perhaps recalling their previous conversation, he corrects: ] …Noctis.

[ The last they had spoken was when nightmare energy had manifested terrible creatures resembling the late Oracle, her bother, and the Father. At least now Noctis knows the creatures that can manifest in this realm, now that he has been here for two months. ]

Perhaps not, but the mechanism in which it “grants” wishes seems to indicate a closer connection to one’s homerealm. [ A shimmer of magic dances at his fingertips, and he calls a bauble into his hand. ] With this as the catalyst.

Hail, O Chosen? [ A pause ] …Seriously?

[ Noctis is not a religious man, not by any means, but he says a quick prayer to the Six that Prompto (and, were they to ever find themselves in Reverein, Ignis and Gladio) never hears about that greeting. He’d never be able to live it down.

He takes a few steps closer to the fountain, coming to a stop at Somnus’s side. It’s wild, standing here next to the Founder King, discussing wishes and dreams. It’s something he doesn’t really do with his own friends, much less somebody who is a technical stranger though he knows far more about Noctis than Noctis knows about him. ]

Nevermind, yeah, Noctis is fine.

[ As he’s speaking, he waves a hand in front of himself, shaking his head and changing the subject away from that greeting and to the bauble in Somnus’s hand, to the fountain in front of them. ]

So, what do you intend to do with it? Sure, it’s tied to Eos somehow, but I don’t think it will get you out of dreaming about our world.

[ Before he answers, Somnus turns his wrist over, dismissing the bauble into the armory. Crystalline magic flashes as the item winks out of existence. Meanwhile, his attention remains on Noctis. ]

Need I remind you, the power of dreams bastardized the vision of others held within your heart. [ And it can happen to anyone and everyone. What horrid creatures they were. ]

I am merely contemplating means to stop this. [ Among other things, but Somnus stops speaking here. ]

Have you noticed that upon this network, it appears more nightmares are preserved rather than dreams?

But I'm not sure what to do about it.

[ Alisaie happened to be passing by the wishing well today, as she was attempting to progress with her own experimentation. A rather plump and pink creature is floating rather casually next to her as she noticed Somnus from a distance.

Something about the man's grim expression and body language concerns her. Thus, she approaches him with the strange creature in toll. ]

Is something troubling you?

Hail, Maiden.

[ A nod, then a slight lift of his chin as his focus shifts to the... animal? Floating next to her. A brow arches delicately, and, perhaps distracted by the creature, he appears slightly less troubled, if only for a moment. ]

Have you used this wishing well?

[ The plump pink creature stares back at him with beady eyes. It floats casually next to Alisaie, but doesn't do much more than that. Alisaie does notice that he's seen her companion. ]

This is-- Angelo. I've been using him to experiment with dreamotion. Moreso-- seeing if there is a possibility for him to contain dreamotion.

[ It's not all that detailed yet, but she's not made much progress yet. Needless to say, she's been trying to feed the creature her dreamotion energy. ]

Unfortunately - I only just arrived here, so I am entirely in the dark to how this place might work!

I was fascinated by dreams in the waking world, and I liked to study their symbolism once upon a time … but as far as keeping them away? I just know the standard remedies.
