Hate to burst your optimism bubble, buddy, but that's kind of just part of having different opinions. Sometimes one viewpoint is so different than the other that it causes them to clash.

Sometimes, it's about revenge for a perceived or real sleight, sometimes it's preemptive paranoia, sometimes it's careless miscommunication, sometimes it's plain old sadistic pleasure, and sometimes, it's prideful elitism.

One time, it was even someone having been bored of doing literally everything else for the six trillionth time and had never done something like that before.

As unsatisfying an answer as this may be... there is no singular reason.

Some cause pain because it suits their needs. Others, simply because they can.

There are also those who choose to find justification for ruthlessness and, in their guilt, manage to convince themselves that there is little wrong with such choices, usually in service to what they perceive to be a greater good. It just so happens that the "greater good" also tends to match their personal gain.

As an addendum, we should note that those who choose to hurt are vastly outnumbered by those who choose to help. The shocking nature of unbridled cruelty has an uncanny ability to make us forget that fact.

People act in the ways that they themselves choose. These choices, if they do not align with your own beliefs, may be difficult or even impossible to understand. Someone who chooses kindness may never understand someone who chooses greed and visa versa for example.
