I've been under the impression that everything here is more or less made up of dream energy. While I've never used dreamotion energy to test the theory out, my working assumption is that when our dream selves cease to be, we'll just pop back to our own worlds.

Have you checked the directory in your journal? It's always fluctuating, so I'd start there first. If your friend's name is missing, then I think it's safe to say they're back home.

Yes, it is highly possible that anyone whose dream self vanished upon waking up again could return back to this world at any given moment. Although I haven’t met someone who left and returned just yet so far.
